What is the Crossing X Bing HookMate, and What Makes It Special?

Firstly, what's a "J-Hook?"

Within the cannabis industry, the J-Hook can be loosely defined as any glass pipe in the shape of the letter J, that is intended to act as a platform through which to use vaporization or consumption devices.  Due to it's rudimentary nature, the J-Hook is one of the few glass designs in the cannabis industry that exists within the public domain, and has thus been oft recreated by numerous brands and custom blowers.  The simplicity of the design often attracts "flavor purists" who prefer a simple, unobstructed glass airpath for a "native" or filterless experience, as opposed to water or other types of filtration.

If it's a favored and staple design, why don't I see them everywhere?

Simply put: the letter J does not lend itself well to being sat down on a flat surface in a three-dimensional world.  Except in rare cases, the J-Hook generally doesn't have feet or any type of stabilizing surface, so the only solution to setting one down is to lay it on it's side.  It's a design limitation that feels like a nuisance and often requires the user to remove their device from the hook between hits.

Not ideal, agreed.  So what's the solution?

Until very recently, there really hasn't been one.  There have been some exceptions to the rule, where custom blowers will craft J-Hooks with little feet that keep it upright on a surface, but those pieces aren't widely accessible to the general public and can be somewhat cost-prohibitive.

Late in 2025, Crossing and I put our collaborative energy into solving the problem of the "homeless hook."  We concluded that we'd like it to take the form of a tactile, easily held, captive base; that not only gives users a place to set down their hook, but also protects the glass and provides a comfortable and stable platform for devices.  We weren't satisfied with simply improving, we wanted to revolutionize the J-Hook experience for the contemporary cannabis user.

Bold statement, but extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Fair...

Introducing the Crossing X Bing HookMate!

The HookMate is a complete system that combines a beautifully hand blown borosilicate glass J-Hook with a tactile, soft-touch coated, food-grade silicone base to assemble the world's first captive J-Hook system.  The hook is secured snugly within the base via a stainless steel retention pin/nut that ensures the safety of the hook and the stability of your devices.  As a bonus, an included stainless steel stir tool is stowed in the side of the base for convenience.

The Base (Designed by Bing):

The distinguishing feature of the HookMate system is it's captive, silicone J-Hook base.  Weighing in at 183g (retention pin and stir tool included), the base has enough heft to stabilize even large electronic vapes, while still being light enough to comfortably hold in the hand without feeling cumbersome.  In choosing a surface texture for the base, we decided to opt for the more premium soft-touch coated silicone for improved grip and an inviting hand-feel.

The concept was originally intended solely for handheld use, but it was discovered that reversing the hook within the base offered an additional "desktop" style orientation that positions the mouthpiece of the hook at a higher angle (pictured below), enabling a top-down style use.

This orientation simultaneously cants the 14mm joint of the hook at an acute angle to the base, which is advantageous as it leans the hot end of a device away from the face of the user.

In either orientation, the base is designed to hug the hook securely and protect it from accidental bumps, knocks, and crashes.

The Hook (Designed by Crossing):

Naturally, the ideal J-Hook base is incomplete without the ideal J-Hook to occupy it.  Crossing was not satisfied designing a basic J-Hook; they wanted a premium product and pulled out all the stops in designing and commissioning top-tier borosilicate glass hooks with excellent heat resistance and flavor preservation.

The hooks are thick, high-clarity, hand-blown borosilicate glass, and feature an exclusive rectangular mouthpiece that required custom tooling to craft.  The rectangular mouthpiece drives wide open airflow that allows for precision vapor control thanks to a strong feedback loop between the device and user.   For stability, Crossing designed the glass to fit snugly within the base and not shift around when properly secured with the retention pin.  This is not your run of the mill J-Hook, this is a premium piece of consumption glass designed and blown for the herbal connoisseur!

The Carry Case (Collaborative Concept):

We understand it is likely you'll want to carry the HookMate everywhere you go in order to receive the envy of all your friends and peers, so Crossing has commissioned a lovely shock-proof, padded and form-fit carry case with zippered pouch and a cutout ripe for the MADHeaters Reload series!

A World Of Use Cases:

The only limit to the utility of the HookMate is one's imagination.  It can be a wieldy handheld companion to your favorite artisanal devices, a desktop platform for stationary sessions, or a whip equipped base station for long-reach and hands-free use.

The Puffco Proxy V2 with glass adapter cup (available soon here on the Crossing website) make an ideal pairing for the HookMate.  On it's lower power settings, the Proxy V2 is capable of producing smooth and terpene rich vapor that is (arguably) best enjoyed through a native glass piece.  The Proxy V2 with glass cup can be oriented with perfect balance in the base, and together feel 100% more stable and secure than with the stock Puffco glass.

Add the optional whip accessory for some extra reach on those dabs!

If desktop dry herb is more your pace, the Vapor Brothers VB1.5 absolutely shines at lower temps through a native glass piece like the HookMate.  The VB1.5 uses an inert ceramic core surrounded by heated balls to gently (or aggressively) pull heat over a bed of flower.  Much like my next recommendation, the Lotus, the VB1.5 has a large degree of call-and-response with a native pipe-equipped user.  This combo is your ticket to articulate vapor control and fine flavor country!

For me, it's the NowInhale Lotus on the HookMate that wins the reach test most often. While it's not without its learning curve, the Lotus can, in experienced hands, produce some of the most flavorful vapor of any device on the market.  It utilizes a torch driven heat-exchanger that is best utilized when one can sense the call and response of the device as it moves air between the exchanger and the bowl.  The heat and density of the vapor being produced acts as direct feedback to the performance of the device, and a J-Hook allows the user to feel and respond to it in real-time.

HookMate Roadmap: Into The Future

On the DIY side, the HookMate system lends itself well to modifications and upgrades, and I have already begun designing custom pieces that can be 3D printed to heighten your experience even further!  These print files will be made available at no cost to all HookMate purchasers (case caddy linked below).

On the manufacturing side, Crossing and I are exploring additional cooling options such as dimpled or bead filled glass, alternative hook designs, earth tone colorways, and more!

Our goal with the HookMate is not only to have the world's premiere captive J-Hook system, but also to support and expand it with practical options and upgrades.

If you are a terp preserver, a J-Hook aficionado, or just in the market for something unique, consider choosing the Crossing X Bing HookMate, and help us build out this newly evolving platform for flavor chasing power users.
